What are exosomes?
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles. They are 1/1000th the size of a cell and are a-cellular containing no DNA, nucleus and/or cellular debris providing cell-free cellular therapy.
Nearly every cell type in the human body makes specific exosomes. However, exosomes derived from the regenerative Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) are now being used as an exciting treatment for hair thinning and hair loss. Consider that as we age the number of Mesenchymal Stem Cells believed to play a role in renewal and repair within the body naturally declines. Exosomes derived from MSCs offer an exciting new treatment option now being studied and used in multiple clinical applications.
Where do exosomes come from?
Nearly every cell type in the human body makes exosomes. However, not all exosomes perform the same function. The exosomes we utilize as part of hair restoration are derived from the Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) known for their regenerative properties. MSC-derived exosomes contain 1,000+ growth factors to stimulate and modulate the body’s normal healing cascade and increase cell-to-cell communication.
Specifically, we use ExoFlo manufactured by Direct Biologics. ExoFlo is isolated from donated human mesenchymal stem cells that are purified by a proprietary process. There are over 10+ billion exosomes per mL of ExoFlo.
How does exosome therapy compare to PRP/Stem cell therapy for hair loss?
Our physicians and patients report that results with exosome therapy is appearing to be very effective in hair loss patients.
The exosomes have a different profile and higher concentration of the important elements needed for cell-to-cell communication. Specifically, the MSC exosomes have been shown to contain Wnt3a which activates the Wnt/Bcatenin pathway critical to hair regeneration. Therefore, the body does not have to clear out any of the other elements as may occur with PRP/Stem cell treatments.
How is ExoFlo given for Hair Loss?
The technique is similar to PRP treatment for hair loss in that the exosomes are delivered to the area of thinning hair or loss by injections, and the procedure is completed in office.
How many treatments are needed and there any guarantees?
Each exosome therapy treatment is customized to the patient’s hair loss and needs. A minimum of one treatment is needed. Patients can expect effects of hair growth in as soon as three months following exosome therapy treatment. Please note: patients can achieve enhanced results with targeted combination therapy. Patient results vary as their response to the exosomes and an exact guarantee cannot be given on how much response will occur.
